So the Mann filter you fitted didn't have ribs? Do you have the part number from the box still?
Where did you buy it out of interest?

Re: Lets Talk Filters
They may have changed their ways then. I'd ordered twice in the past and they were always wrong; sounds like the OP had a similar experience if he was surprised to get a filter with ribs.
They're cheap enough that I change it every 10k. They are still very clean at that kind of mileage I find

I should add - the correct Mann filter, supplied by GSF, will also have the reinforcing ribs like the OE filter and the Mahle filter you liked.

Re: Lets Talk Filters
The correct air filter for a B5.5 Passat should have the reinforcing ribs on the back side to stop it fanning out. Euro car parts are monkeys and supply filters for other vehicles that are more or less the right size but missing the ribs (I guess it works out marginally cheaper for them that way). S...

Re: Broken pulley on alternator
With the air conditioning belt, it is quite tight, the easiest thing to do is take the outer bolt completely out of the AC tensioner which gives you a bit of extra slack. There is a trick some people do once the alternator is out which involves replacing the bolts with slightly longer ones from the ...

Re: Installed B5 non Airbag Seats - airbag light on...
If the old seat is scrap then take the airbag connector off the old seat. You can then solder the resistor into the old airbag plug, and fit it to your existing wiring loom. This will get you a secure solution which isn't going to fall out and leaves your factory wiring intact.

How-to use ERWIN website to get factory PDF service manuals
ERWIN is a great way to get up-to-date service manuals for your VAG car for little cost. It is provided by VAG as a service for 3rd party repairers to get access to all their manuals. Much more detailed than Haynes, though not as DIY oriented so doesn't cover makeshift tools etc. The website is at h...

Re: oil filter housing bolts - torque spec
It's not the money - they're not my docs to share. I didn't really want to post that pic, but seemed like the only way to clear up confusion. It shouldn't be difficult to find them on the ERWIN site and it is worth getting acquainted with as they have all the manuals for all the VAGs. I'm going to b...

Re: Broken pulley on alternator
There is a great video on youtube of how to get the pulley off properly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p52VTAnLptI The best way is to lock the hex part of the alternator tool in a well mounted strong vice, mounted at an angle so that you can get the alternator onto it and the torx or spline bit th...

Re: oil filter housing bolts - torque spec
I don't know; I'm not a mechanic. I would say though that: 1) these bolts are unlikely to be changed often, so not a fast running item they'd be very familiar with 2) the TPS guy isn't going to look stuff up in the repair manual for you, so he is just reading the part off the screen and combining th...

I was thinking they looked soft. You could always fashion something else onto it.

Re: How much oil does your Passat take
LIDL have a 12V unit which comes up from time to time, about £15. I might get one next time. Usefully, it can pump straight into an old oil container.

I know it is pink / purple for g13. I mean the stuff that looks stuck to the underside of the top of the coolant bottle - the pink patches in the photo.

Re: oil filter housing bolts - torque spec
I recall you put in a VIN which finds relevant docs (I think). Otherwise I think you do just get some generic manuals for various bits of nonsense.
The AVF engine is covered in the "4-cylinder diesel engine with unit injector" manual; it covers
AJM
ATJ
AVB
AVF
AWX
It is 140 pages.

Re: oil filter housing bolts - torque spec
The factory service manuals you can download at ERWIN have all the torques in them. It costs something like £5 for an hours access, and that will be enough to download all the docs for a couple of models if you are quick. They come as PDFs which you can stick on your phone, very handy. They also he...

Re: How much oil does your Passat take
It intrigues me I must say. If I put 4l in mine after sucking it out and the oil cooler I would be well over the top. I think all the 130hp units are as per my pic, but can't be sure.
