Re: My B5.5 and I.. In it for the long haul...
Nice work, I did exactly the same last week before the Mot. All discs and pads, plus offside rear calliper. That side disc was messed up a little. And the calliper handbrake mechanism had broke. Handbrake came up really high and was hitting the centre arm rest. Now it’s 3 clicks. Glad I did everythi...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Had to spend some money on the car just before Mot. New discs and pads plus I found the left rear calliper handbrake wasn’t working. I tried to fix it but didn’t really have the time so bought a new one. Bled all the brakes etc and done a few other jobs. Passed mot and they spent ages checking brake...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Remanufactured alternator is in, seems to be working.
Bought it from ECP as the parts to fix my old one were going to take over a week to arrive.

B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Took the alternator off and gave it to a local repair company. There going to let me know how much. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230606/3389489fe27401b717e0031c02bfee50.jpg Had to cut off the bottom bolt to get it out. Looks like the whole front will have to come off when I put it back in. Sen...

When I turn the engine off it carries on spinning clockwise. I think I will have to take the belt off and have a look

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Driving home and got Alternator Workshop message. Checked the battery and alternator. Battery is fine it’s only a few months old. But alternator is not charging at all. If anything the volts drop from 11.80v when the car is off to 11.5v when the car is idling. Normally get 13 to 14v when the car was...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
New problem over the last few weeks the windscreen has been coated with a silver residue inside. Doesn’t matter how much I clean it, it’s back then next day. So after some searching I believe I have a coolant leak. I checked the reservoir and it’s dropped about 10mm from max. It started when I had t...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
I think even though the old battery is showing that’s it’s charged properly I haven’t been able to test it. The new battery is starting the car straight away without any delay. The voltage is holding up ok after a short 20 minute drive. I guess the cold weather in combination with age might have aff...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
The new bracket arrived and managed to fit it without any issues.
The old bracket with wood was holding fine tbh but the actual 096 bracket does a better job.

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
I have been testing the old battery after fully charging it. After a couple of days it’s holding at 12.59v but I haven’t put any load on it as yet. In the car it was falling quite low in the mornings. Around 11.0v one day and nothing was happening turning the key until about 5 seconds when it would ...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
I just about managed it this time too. Not easy especially leaning over the car trying to pull that 110 battery out. The bracket won’t be shipped until January, so will have to just keep an eye on things. Tbh a piece of metal with the hole drilled in the right place would probably be fine. It’s cost...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
The original Moll battery was a 110 and wouldn’t come out without removing everything. I remember removing the wipers and breaking the scuttle panel. The Bosch 110 came out but it was difficult. A lot easier to drop the 096 in though. My car is a SE but doesn’t really have much in the way of electri...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
I managed to order one, can’t believe the prices. I guess there’s not much choice if it’s needed. I tried the old bracket a few different ways but it’s not holding it super tight. I’m sure there’s some way of fitting it but it was raining and unbelievable winds. It’s not too bad atm but I rather hav...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Not the best angle but the battery’s are similar but definitely different dimensions. This one was about 58 pounds cheaper than the old one but hardly any difference in performance

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Can anyone confirm if a Bosch 096 battery is sufficient? The one I put in last time was a BOSCH S5 BATTERY 110 85AH 800C
This new one is a bit smaller

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Had a few issues with the battery. The cold weather made it more obvious, So I have ordered a new one. It’s not holding normal charge but still starting the car. This morning the voltage was 11.97v. After driving it, it stops around 12.4v. But again drops very low by the morning. Alternator seems ok...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
From what time I had today, i managed to do a few logs, I can see the MAF is functioning correctly, the CTS is also working. The alternator pulley is locking in one direction, and the power steering pulley is spinning smoothly. I ran out of time to take the belt off fully and I didn’t want to start ...

Re: My B5.5 and I.. In it for the long haul...
I always used to think to myself, if Colin ever sold his car I would definitely buy it. How is he nowadays? His invaluable advice saved me hundreds in the past. I rarely see another b5.5 nowadays on the road. If I do it’s normally an estate but getting rarer everyday. Especially good ones like yours...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Found the charging wire, hopefully tomorrow I’m going to check the temp sensor at cold.
Then take the drive belt off. I can’t remember but is the ac belt separate to the auxiliary belt?
May as well check the alternator pulley.

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Thank you I will add it to the list of checks. I did the coolant sensor when I first got the car. I first put a Chinese branded one in then while I was on here it was recommended to spend as much as possible to avoid future issues. So I got one from vw. So according to when I changed it, roughly spe...

B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Oh yes I remember reading about premature camshaft wear, now you mentioned that I also remember people can have issues with the wiring loom that runs at the top of the engine. The only thing that leads me to think it’s something to do with power steering is because the steering wheel has some vibrat...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Car is shaking quite bad at idle, especially when cold. I took the MAF sensor off and things improved. But after a few drives it was back. Put the sensor back in, but I want to check it in vcds however I can’t find the charging wire for the laptop. Im guessing here, could also be alternator pulley b...

Re: B5.5 Boring and on a Budget!
Thanks, will use like the Carlube stuff, I normally don’t measure out the ratio just dump about 300ml in before filling up or after. It definitely makes a difference in my car, or at the least I can tell when I haven’t been using it for a month. Not really performance but more smoother acceleration,...
