I havn't yet picked the car up, it is in a garage at the moment. But will try these suggested things when I collect it.

I dont know if it has deadlocks or not. I think 1997 may of been the cross over year, and this car being an early 1997 might be either way.
I know it deffinatly has a vacuum pump in located in the boot. When it kicks in, it stays running for ages.
