New engine - old car ?

I'm somewhat disillusioned with what dealers are offering for our 2008 diesel CR Passat estate - one cheeky ******* offered £1500 !!! -- I could get more than that if I broke it up on the drive !! So ... I have a theory ... pay some money and get a later engine like a 2014 >> engine with the import...

Re: Should a rattle cause this ....

Thought about it but they seem sound enough - not that easy to test - you can get the engine to rock if you're aggressive but doesn't seem to make the noise. I'm tempted to drop all the BS plastics off the front - undertray / splashguards, the underfloor stuff and drive to see if anything 'changes' ...

Re: Should a rattle cause this ....

:hyst A possibility but alas my OCD on the matter won't be pacified till it has been tracked down and eliminated. I'm just out of ideas where it's coming from or why it would sometimes appear as though something that rotates is catching something ... I've had just about everything that rotates at th...

Should a rattle cause this ....

OK I'm suffering an itch ... seen a doctor it isn't helping ... so ... I have a '57' plate Passat Estate 3.2 DSG - spent a fortune on it including a £1200 manifold back Cybox exhaust amongst other things. Problem - there's a stupid rattle that I can't find and it is pushing me into car replacing te...

Re: Any bodywork demons here ?

I've tried adjusting the door catches. In any other position you do need to slam the door almost to close it but then it looks OK is - but it isn't right (I know because I have two Passat Estates). The gap and height is correct according to VW spec's but it seems twisted somehow. the metalwork is al...

Any bodywork demons here ?

I have an issue with the drivers door that's been driving me nuts for a year - the window frame isn't flush with the front of the back door like it is supposed to be, the back door window frame stands proud of the rear glass / trim. It's been like this since I had it - thought realigning would be si...

Re: parking brake error problem

If you're serious about VAG products then VCDS HEX-USB+CAN is the cable you want - it can talk 'VAG' to pretty much anything in a VAG motor. It will give you detailed VAG error codes and there is a massive amount of information out there on what those numbers mean. OBD is far too generic . Check out...

Re: Parts OEM v Aftermarket and VAG numbers

Try buying specific VW tools from a VW dealership here in the UK. Perhaps it's the dealerships I've approached but I had to go to Germany to get the special tool for removing the fuel rail on the VW crafter - just one special socket and it cost 40 Euro !!. The splined bit to remove the manifold on a...

Re: Parts OEM v Aftermarket and VAG numbers

I do agree on the buy cheap buy twice, I also know about the restrictions placed on OEM parts manufacturers preventing them from reselling but do you think a reputable company is going to sacrifice its business by making sure that everything else it produces is substandard compared to VAG. The probl...

Re: parking brake error problem

Brakes - basically correct although there is all kinds of biasing and some other stuff going on too - don't get started on ABS / traction control (which are braking functions) just yet. As far as I know the handbrake bases the pressure on disc using the current drawn, it expects to achieve a certain...

Parts OEM v Aftermarket and VAG numbers

I'm not sure whether this post belongs here but the general forums don't seem appropriate either - mods feel free to relocate in a better place exists. Right now I'm replacing a number of bits on the car mostly transmission related i.e driveshafts / wheel bearings. It has raised in me the question o...

Re: parking brake error problem

You may have wound it too far - now it's out of range perhaps - the aproach you took certainly isn't the approved route. Bottom line the answer is I'm afraid 'yes' to the garage if you don't have the tools to talk to the cars control boxes properly. I know VCDS seems expensive but mines paid for its...

Re: parking brake error problem

Just how did you change the brake pads ?? If you don't have the diagnostic tool to tell the EPB motors to back off then you cannot do this job since not only do you need to back them off via the 'diagnostic' tool but you must also do an adaptation to tell the system how thick the new pads are, once ...

Re: Anyone else had this issue......

Beware - the Passat system must be pressure bled and use the correct fluid - do not be tempted to put DOT5 through it - unless you fancy stumping up for a new ABS pump - you can't do it properly with one of the vacuum type systems, you can do it old school using two people (one to drive the pedal an...

Re: B6 3.2 4Motion - Cardan flexible coupling

Had a look, didn't see much. I've spent half the day under the car and there is no way at all to remove the 'cardan' without dropping the exhaust which is simply not happening on a driveway. I had a new set of pipes made by Cybox but that won't make it any easier. I can get the joint for £80 with n...

B6 3.2 4Motion - Cardan flexible coupling

Has anyone here replaced the flexible coupling on the gearbox end of the cardan shaft (the front to rear propshaft). A new prop is an eyewatering 1400 Euro plus VAT, VW won't sell the coupling on its own but they are available. So has anyone done this job or had it done. The job looks like a bit of ...

Re: Any 100 mm hex key balancer shaft failures ?

Can't be the same - not in the remanufactured shafts - if it were there wold be absolutely no point having a 100mm shaft. 15mm on a 77mm and 15mm on a 100mm - totally and utterly stupid in engineering terms since a 100mm shaft is more prone to twist if not supported. It may be 15mm in the oil pump i...

2008 but late 2008 so it is a CR engine (CBAB) not a PD - still has a 77mm shaft in it.

Re: Any 100 mm hex key balancer shaft failures ?

I don't think it's a big job but that depends how confident you are, I think KMB charge a couple of hundred to do the fitting. I wouldn't get too worried ours is on 120k miles currently I guess it depends which engine's in yours. I've never found a how to but then I've never looked since once upon a...

Re: Any 100 mm hex key balancer shaft failures ?

From what I've been able to deduce much of the wear is cause by alignment defects - basically the shaft isn't properly centred between the oil pump and balance shaft - the oil pump / balance shaft alignment is out by a tiny amopunt, the more it is out the faster the wear and why some cars seem bette...

Re: Any 100 mm hex key balancer shaft failures ?

So KMB Parts Direct claim of 15 mm contact the same as 77 mm key is tosh. And exactly as I suspected otherwise there is no logical need for the extra length. It does appear though that once the miles gets to a certain point that replacing becomes a priority regardless of it's length. So 77mm anythi...

And the caliper carrier is tight in a way that will produce nasty words - oh and it's a 12 point bolt - so no spanners or normal socket will touch them (2 per side), they're a pig to get at to get any leverage on them and just to finish the insult the bolts aren't supposed to be re-used and you can'...

Re: Any 100 mm hex key balancer shaft failures ?

No and that's why I'm changing it - but I'd take a lot of convincing re the 100mm - I'd like to see a new (or used) 100mm VW key and balance shaft for myself (not a reman one but a genuine one)
