Five speed auto reliability
Hi folks. I'm looking to get myself another B5.5. I had a PD130 Sport estate a few years ago in pristine condition which I now massively regret getting rid of. I'm currently driving a PD130 mk4 Golf estate with the five speed auto 09A gearbox (Jatco JS506E) which has given me non-stop issues ever si...

Re: Gear box problem
Similar issues on the mk4 Golf automatics are usually down to bad solenoids. Often resulting in refusing to go from neutral into drive until the box has warmed up a bit, at which point it shifts fine. I'm not sure which gearbox the Passat 4 speed uses but it would be worth checking out. I know the s...

Re: What do I need to retrofit Multifunction Steering Wheel?
It may well not be connected to the FIS in full - I just know that buttons on the steering wheel are tied to it and to have one you had to have the other (from the factory) That's not to say that you can't rig something together that works. I believe there's a thread on here somewhere (Or maybe it w...

Re: What do I need to retrofit Multifunction Steering Wheel?
I've not done it myself but I imagine you'll at the very least need the clockspring as well, and most likely the harness inside the steering wheel column. I'm not sure if this harness would go straight to behind the radio, or goes back to the CCM (or another control module) which then sends inputs o...

Re: Rear electric windows
It's to do with the rear wheel arch intruding into the door area. Notice how some cars have the little quarter light at the back of the rear door - this is because the rear wheel intrudes too far into the door and would stop the window lowering much at all without the quarter light. Passats have the...

Re: Best door lock actuator?
FWIW I threw a cheap £20 eBay one on my old Passat and I put 25k miles/3 years on it before I sold it without a single hiccup. That was a driver's door one as well so it saw a fair amount of use.

Re: Upgrade Radio and CD Install B5.5
well if i lose the bass and have to buy sub amp n loads don't think i will bother You won't lose all of it, it's just that a lot of people buy aftermarket speakers thinking they'll make more bass than factory when in reality it's either very similar or even lack-luster. Level of bass is subjective ...

what are decent speakers to upgrade to as i remember i did them once in a astra and sounded awful rear speakers / front ones to avoid Are you going to be amplifying them or not? I have a set of JBL Stage 600CE Components in my current car. They sounded very limp and meh on head unit power but sound...

Re: Upgrade Radio and CD Install B5.5
Another hijack, Does the Passat need a wiring adapter to make an aftermarket stereo plug and play? Never had mine out but replacing with aftermarket unit and rather have one than resort to getting the soldering iron out. Passats use ISO plugs. Bonus is that pretty much all stereos sold in the UK co...

Re: Upgrade Radio and CD Install B5.5
hijacking the thread  Its possible to put an amplifier to the stock gamma so i can connect a sub woofer ? Yes, there are boxes which convert the high-level outputs of the stock HU's to the low-level RCA outputs or you could just buy an all-in-one sub which has the high-level inputs already...

Re: Never own another passat
I had my '02 Sport Estate for nearly three years and took it from 150k to 185k. It was a brilliant car and one of the favourites I've ever owned. When I came to selling it I went through the receipts and realised just how much bloody money I'd spent on it. New front suspension arms here, new lock mo...

Re: Mud flaps wagon
I fitted a set of universal ones from eBay on my partner's Seat Ibiza and they look and perform fine. When I originally fitted them I did it with the vehicle jacked up and wheels off. I set them hilariously low by accident - almost touching the ground at the back. The result was that with anyone in ...

Re: Alarm and locking problem
Door locks messing around and alarm going off is usually down to a faulty door lock module. If you have access to vagcom you can check the open/closed and locked/unlocked status of each door to see which one is causing the problem. The modules and sensors are all integrated into the door lock itself...

Re: dash cams and ignition switched live
B5/5.5s have a super handy permanent and switched live under the dashboard. If you remove the knee panel under the steering wheel, you'll see the bottom of the relay board and this: https://a.d-cd.net/1bb2f28s-960.jpg I believe the red "30" bolts are permanent live, and the yellow "75...

Re: Slight vibration at idle, occasional judder when pulling away
I had, and still have a vibration at idle which disappears upon raising revs.Engine mounts were changed, out came dmf and clutch which were in brilliant condition, in went new, still have vibration, though I never had the juddering which in itself suggests you have to drop the box to investigate. T...

Re: Slight vibration at idle, occasional judder when pulling away
I live in Shepton Mallet, the other side of Bath to you it looks like. It's the six speed box. Shame really as the clutch itself operates fine otherwise. No shuddering at all if you pull away in second or in reverse and clutch feel is great when it's not shuddering. Can you drop the box with the en...

Slight vibration at idle, occasional judder when pulling away
Hi guys, 2002 PD130 sport estate, ~180k miles I have a suspicion that this might all be DMF related but I'm really hoping I can get another year or so out of the car before I need to change the clutch. Not enough pennies to pay someone else to do it so I'd be doing it on my own, and I've not done a ...

Re: 2002 1.9tdi TDI sluggish
I'd check the air and fuel filters while you're at it as well. Cheap (I picked up the pair for £20 at my local motor factors) and both are super easy to do.
Mine definitely picked up a little after changing them - the air filter had a good 20k miles on it and the fuel filter looked ancient.

I ended up doing a wiper delete on mine and put a gromet in the hole. I bought the car with a non-functioning rear wiper and replaced it with a second hand unit. That worked fine wiper-wise (wash only half worked, but it was enough) for two years or so until that one chucked its toys out of the pram...

Re: Abs traction light on dash
Another vote for brake light switch. Both of mine will pop up occasionally and an engine restart will get rid of them. When they do pop up it's the moment you touch the brake pedal, but only happens once a month or so and more often in the winter. Replacing the brake light switch is on my rather lon...

SO glad mine was just before DPFs were introduced.
