To be fair, that article makes it sound much more time consuming and difficult than it really is....also, similar legislation has been in effect in Europe for many years, but engine swaps are still common....

You're alright, engine swaps aren't illegal yet, although you may get asked to get the car inspected.... Audi made 2wd cars with the 2.6 and 2.8 V6 engines- I've got a 2.8 2wd B4 Audi coupe, but you'd probably be better off using A4 bits... I'd try and buy a complete car so you could rob all the bit...

Try your local vw specialist- I spoke to stealth about camber/tracking setup on my B5 and they were fine- knew the score with it being lowered (it's not, but I was going to!)etc
