50-52mpg on a run in my PD Passat, and up into mid 50s in summer.
Your figures sound spot on.

Re: Binding front brakes
Could well have bee the hoses. They came up as an MOT advisory as being slightly deteriorated and my mechanic had to replace the caliper and hose on the near side.
All sorted now, just need to get it through its MOT and then it can be prepared for selling.

That's what I was thinking. Selling the car as soon as its through its MOT so don't want to bodge it.Gazwould wrote:Can't beat a new piston and seal kit , proper job .

Binding front brakes
Just the near side is binding, which has been picked up from an MOT. Are we talking caliper off and cleaned, perhaps a new repair kit? Or any easy way of checking and fixing? Thanks

Re: Is the fuel economy possible?
Please stop talking of your good MPG, petrol owners here :(( What sort of economy does a petrol return? Don't go there!! I get an average of around 18 mpg and not that's not a heavy right foot!! on a good day if I put my foot down I can nearly see single figures if I'm on a run I once got 26 mpg bu...

My car is on 175k, original turbo, clutch etc and I'd do that no question. Oil is changed every 5k, so the car never gets neglected and it is so much happier doing long trips.

That's an interesting table Karl, thanks. Didn't realise 11.9V is 40% of its capacity! Wouldn't have assumed that at all, so you soon realise what a massive difference 0.7 volts makes!

RTX are an ECP own brand and are not remanufactured units. I worked for them for many years and I wouldn't buy one myself, not when a reman unit is a few quid more.

Healthy battery voltage
My Passat has been a little lazy turning over a few mornings this week (cold weather). I've checked the battery under load (running, lights, heater etc) and that all seems fine (13.8V so alternator is fine). Went out this morning and yesterday morning and the battery measured only 11.8V after a nigh...

Front bumper Trims
Is it easy to remove these to swap them over? I have found a replacement bumper in the right colour, but with black trims, so I would need to swap them for the ones I have on mine. Thanks

You won't pay his travel if you have a few peeps there, he only charged me travel because it was just me! (Might be different now though)
If my memory serves me correctly it cost me £147 all fitted for cruise but my memory is iffy and it might have been £127!

Re: Ideas please
My advice is, don't bother with a warranty claim. Mine were re sprayed under warranty and two years later, they are bubbling through worse than before. I don't believe VW bother to do these warranty claims properly, because they are hassle and often on very old cars worth next to nothing. I had to p...

Same issue on mine many moons ago, also had the tailgate open warning coming on whilst driving along. Not to mention the alarm going off because of the same issue. Worth getting fixed to avoid that as its annoying to say the least!

3rd cambelt change due
My car is approaching 180k and I'm thinking it will need its 3rd belt change. Last time it was done at VW but now I want to get it done cheaply as the car is getting on and not worth spending fortunes on. I know a few names get thrown around on here for people who do this job. Also, would I need to ...

Had the same problem on mine only the water kept setting the alarm off randomly as it dripped onto the boot switch.
Bought the repair kit for about £28 iirc and it was easy to change.

Re: 3K service too often PD130?
Change mine every 5k with a new filter. Use 5W40 PD oil (4 litres of Petronium is around £20) and the car is on 171k so very happy with it.
To be honest, 10k oil services would be fine, but anyone who leaves oil for 20k before changing it must be mentally ill.

I would also say radiator, as mine did the same thing and lost small amounts of coolant over a long period without any noticeable leaks. Radiator replaced and now the car hasn't lost coolant for the last 2 years (touch wood)

Re: Electrical Problems
The copper furring most likely indicates the issue, although I'd check the fuses just in case. You don't need broken wires to get intermittent electrical issues caused by water ingress. Replace any corroded wires and seal them up.
Have you sorted the water ingress issues?

Re: Help with mr muscle cleaning my turbo
Critical mass, have you sprayed mr muscle into the inlet side of the turbo? Surely not a sensible move. The mr muscle is designed to clean the exhaust side and doesn't go into the engine at all. Misleading information there.
