Re: service now! dash info
I tried the - press trip; ignition on; release trip - but nothing changed! Tried turning rest to the right, no change. Display insists on SERVICE NOW! What do I try now? It is an all digital dash (except speedo/tach). Thanks

Re: service now! dash info
Hi, everything up to date; all filters, cam belt, water pump. Just want that warning gone and more good driving! Bobman's instruction via link should help; but how can I be sure I am not hiding something that needs attention? Would it show as a fault if something else was needed? My panel reads serv...

service now! dash info
My B5.5 , 2.0 petrol is showing this on start up. Not had a dash display like this before on a car. What would happen if I ignore this? Will it ultimately stop the engine until it is reset or serviced? What service is it demanding? Last service was about 16 months ago, 6000 miles. It has long life o...

Re: anti roll bar bushes
Easy job. Two bolts to each clamp. BUT, different diameter roll bars in use. VIN number at the VW dealer (or reg number) will get you the correct standard bush. About £15 the pair.

or you could now consider fitting the uprated disc/calliper set as often mentioned on here. That will require the 16" wheels to fit though.
or find someone that has fitted such a set, and buy their standard set for small money.

Where does the cable plug into the car? The last time I played with diagnostics, it was 25 years ago using a Sun; it all clipped to various parts of the engine. Long before ECU's!

Re: antifreeze????
Workshop manager at VW Canterbury told me you can not adequately drain the antifreeze to allow a mismatched fluid into the system. A small pocket of the wrong stuff mixed together can cause the lot to become a gel, which does not act as coolant, thus allowing the engine to overheat, quickly, requiri...

Re: Which steering fluid + g'box oil?
Thanks guys. 75w90 gear oil and Steering fluid is CHF11. I appreciate gear oil will be thick and heavy until it gets hot, but I am concerned that ATF will challenge the seals as it is so thin. I'll get around to doing these once the snow and ice have moved on. Changing those fluids made a difference...

Which steering fluid + g'box oil?
My old Honda required a Honda steering fluid, what about the Passat? I have read of the recommendation to put in ATF in all gearboxes, but I would rather go for the VW preferred. So which oils for these two locations?

Re: Just got my 20v and have a few questions.
Plugs and air filter may help mpg. As will a bottle of decongestant in a full tank of petrol, STP. Get it hot on a run and keep the revs high, gives it a decoke.

Re: Which battery?
Quick tip : dont believe 'em when they say it will work straight out of the box. Put the new battery on a trickle charge for at least twelve hours before use, longer if you can. Even lead/acid batteries have a memory. If they are not charged first, they will never deliver their full potential. That ...

Re: Did I waste money on a new brake pedal switch?
When I first drove my 04 home, I had problems with lights and engine managemment. It was all caused by the brake light switch according to local VW main agent diagnostic. New switch fitted + diagnostic = £35.00. Bargain repair price, sick on a 'new' car though. At 160k, I suggest it was a good insu...

The three bolts visible on the inner wing secure the whole of the top mount - two arms + coilover unit. The two bolts hidden below grommets in the inner wing only secure the coilover - difficult to access. You appear to have removed at least one of the two upper arm inner bolts? With both these remo...

I managed to release the radio with the keys, but it only came forward about 1.5 cm and there is the other control panels to release, so I left it for now.

B5.5 saloon front top mount
I have read that the strut top mount should be replaced as a matter of course when doing any big change to the suspension. I see it is just a large rubber bush. Is there anything better to replace it with? A bearing mount? Or is it best to just fit a new rubber bush top mount?

Re: Minimal lowering springs - which ones?
I am considering Koni FSD, bu twhich spring? Why are Eibach so expensive!? It is a real minefield of options. There are some rough roads around here, but I reckon I can do a 25 - 30mm drop without any trouble. But I really want to keep the comfy ride. The 2.0 engine though adequate, is not a racer, ...

Minimal lowering springs - which ones?
I only want to drop the suspension about 25mm, so other than worn out springs, which brand will offer the least drop? I want a comfy ride, but to lower the car just a bit. Can anyone recommend a top brand spring to do this? I am wondering about using a standard sport spring, which should give some d...
