Mk3 Toledo issue

Hi folks,
After some advice regarding a mk3 toledo issue.
It's a 2005 1.6 petrol. (Big ass model!).
There's a fault showing on vcds lite, 16688 - cylinder 4 - misfire. There's also a bit of white smoke if you plant it in 1st or 2nd.
Initially with the smoke I checked coolant for a leak but it's not leaking or overheating. Still a possibility for the head?
Then I scanned and saw the fault so is there a likelihood it's connected?
Am thinking first thing would be a compression test or is would that be waste of time?
