First use of a buffer

hi guys can you please advice me one the best way to use a car buffer, is it put the polish on the buffer pad then polish the car or wipe it on with a cloth then use the buffer, i knwo you have to use soapy water to stop it from burning the paint work. i used my buffer at the weekend and think the job i did was not to bad.
