Is My Starter on it's way oot?

On a few occasions when I have gone to start my car, I turn the key & it won't start, I here a clicking at the engine but no starter, I'll return the key to off position & try again, it's fine. A few days ago I had to do this twice. But it did start on the third try. Car is B5.5 TDI

Any help will be appreiciated
