Diesel tax?

Hi all, does anyone know what is happening with car tax on diesels? I know that all new cars are hit with a hefty price on first registration but is this going to continue over to older cars as well? There seems to be so much conflicting reading online I just thought I'd see if anyone could clear it up. Cheers, Martin.
