B5.5 Gamma 6 disc in dash changer problem

Hi All
Tried a CD in the changer and initially got the 'CD Error' message. Tried a brand new disc and still the same. After repeated ejecting and reloading it now tries to play the disc but I only get a few seconds of music every so often and then the audio cuts out again.
I only recently bought and I am quite keen on the keeping the original system rather than swapping it for something that lights up like a Christmas tree. The seller assured me the changer worked. He seemed a decent enough guy and I've read that these units fail suddenly and regularly so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Any suggestions to get it working without spending a fortune on it gratefully received.
