Tailgate central locking cylinder problems

I suspect the previous owner broke the centrally locking tailgate key in that lock. 
I followed the Haynes guidance (which incidentally was unhelpful !) by removing the trim and then disconnecting the connecting rod to the tailgate ‘catch’.
I then disconnected the operating rod from the ‘positioner’ but was unable to extract it from the ‘lower cylinder housing’.
Furthermore, I undid both the 10mm mounting nuts and it seemed that it would not allow the complete housing to be extracted from the outside of the tailgate even if I had removed the operating rod.
Query, does anyone know how to dismantle and gain access to the lock cylinder?
