Strange engine temp

Bit of a strange one I think, drive car as normal even in stationery traffic on a hot day the temp gauge is fine, but when driving up a hill on Sunday evening the temp gauge went to pretty much 90 and stayed there bare in mind wasn't warm as it was 12 at night, only seems to do it on this one hill as it's did it a few times but thought nothing of it as they were during the day so was warmer. Temp dropped to normal then after a few minutes any ideas what this could be or just simple fact of up hill driving?
