Faulty cigarette lighter socket

Hello,
Annoyingly, the front cigarette lighter socket in my 2005 B5.5 Passat has become faulty. I don't smoke but like most people use it to charge a phone. It will work with a lot of fiddling with one phone charger I have but is very sensitive to movement (rules out fuse). So much so, to be useless. The rear one has never worked!
Any hints, tips or advice on what it may be and how to fix it? (Both ideally!)
