2004 coolant bypass hose cap

Hi, looking to install an air to water intercooler but this mushroom cap (1J0121324) is sticking out from the b5.5 coolant bypass hose/metal pipe and will not allow enough room for the intercooler. what exactly is this for? does it really need to be there? is it a pressure release or just for easier flushing?
