Cooling fan coming on?

Hello all. I have noticed the last few day that the cooling fan has been coming on even in cooler weather and for short trips?
It doesn't stay on for too long, normally about thirty seconds after engine is stopped.
Not noticed it before except in very hot weather? Any ideas to what could be causing this, failure of a relay possibly?
Vehicle is a Passat Wagon 1.9 tdi AFN engine.
