Buying a 2.0 tdi. Are they really that bad?

Newbie here.
As above. Currently have a MK4 Golf PD130 which is solid at 162k. Need a bigger motor for dogs, camping etc. my budget is is about £3.5k so that limits me to higher mileage older B6's. Major headache as I like the idea of the 2.0tdi but the common issues are really off putting. The 1.9 is just far to slow plus I prefer the 6-speed box. Help please.
