Have you used a multi meter to see if you have continuity between contacts? sounds like bottom plate is in the down postion causing a circuit.

Sounds like your drain vents might be blocked,,a very common problem, under bonnet top rubber seal off and remove plastic tray covering battery and pollen filter housing..check for water which can then leak into the botton of the pollen filter hosing and then into car..loads of posts on it in search

The air con compressor is a rivet construction and they wear, just drill out rivets and replace with nut and bolts. Forge dump valve is the way foward, check for correct spring if you order one. coil packs common failure. Also throttle body clean will prob help. if it's cable, easy, if it's electron...

Yeah try a silicon based lube, the unit isn't a break the bank item from the dealers either and it's only a few screws and plug and play..

I used to use about half a Ltr every 1000 miles or so on my 1.8T and that talking to a few mates was normal, whats your mileage?

Any ideas where the solenoid is stored? It's the physical fuel cap itself, it used to snap into place when closing but now feels as if there's something jamming or it's not catching Your going to have to take out the back panel and access from there, sorry not done a passat one before, only golfs, ...
