Re: Frugal

At low speeds on tiny B roads I can achieve the same mpg in the 4motion - regularly get 55-60 on short to medium journeys like this. Mainly I drive A roads and Motorways though - and you're looking at 42-44 tops, on a good day.

Re: Rear Tyre Wear

I didn't fit the coilies but previous owner was running fat fives and I know he did have the tracking done, but I'm guessing not on the standard rims. Just wanted some confirmation that's what I'm looking at as it's already costing me a bomb this month, can't afford much trial and error! So thanks g...

Rear Tyre Wear

4Motion estate - with AP coilovers, am getting quite heavy wear on the outside edge of both rear tyres. Both at 35psi. As you can see I need new tyres anyway, but is this something that should be fixed with getting a full 4 wheel alignment done? I'd like to know I'm doing the right thing before shel...

Re: Chrome Trim

After much googling I've found out that you can only buy the whole rub strip - plastic + chrome and it's £50+ from VW, plus it needs to be painted. There is no way of removing the chrome strip... as it comes already bonded to the plastic. How absurd is this?! Will literally cost me hundreds to repl...

Re: Crappiest car you have ever owned?

I'm going to go against the grain - owned a few French cars when I was younger as they were cheap - and they were massively reliable and cheap to run, albeit totally un-inspiring. Worst car I've owned has to be an Austin Allegro Vanden Plas, terrible. Best cars I've owned have been Japanese, but I s...

Re: Leaking Radiator - Coolant Top Up Advice

Thank you, yes coolant is red and as it should be, it's only a tiny leak... I've driven about 4000 miles since coolant header was full and now it is headed towards minimum. Usually I would top with water (usually driving around in a banger) but always hear about how important the right coolant is fo...

Leaking Radiator - Coolant Top Up Advice

Basic question. Radiator has a small slow leak but I can't get it in to be replaced until next week - and this weekend I'm doing a 400 mile round trip. So... want to make sure I'm prepared with a bottle of coolant in the car to top up if needed. Hoping to drop by Halfrauds or similar and pick someth...

Chrome Trim

Chrome strip from my drivers side rear door (wagon) has come off, was dodgy when I bought the car, having being re-fitted. It isn't perfectly straight and so is destined to always be pretty useless, so I'm after a brand new one. Does anyone know where I could pick one up other than VW? Failing that ...

Re: dip stick

right near the bottom there is a small recessed section with a faint cross-hatch pattern on it, this is your usable area, the bottom being minimum and the top being maximum. If this isn't on your dipstick then check it hasn't been broken!

Re: Whistling Sound!

I have got the (very quiet) 'police siren in the distance' sound when tootling about yes, but that is separate to the much louder whistle and subsequently not bothering me. Funny you should mention that, someone only said to me the other day 'I can hear sirens' :-P

Whistling Sound!

Bit of a grey area describing sounds, but worth an ask... From just under 2k rpm up until about 2.5k rpm there is a whistling sound that is more prominent with the windows down. It sounds pretty much exactly like when you have an annoying door seal or wing mirror, but it is the same at any speed (ie...

Yep I've noticed this over the past few days - the top corners fade out ever so slightly when it's very hot, returns to normal when it's cooled down. Hopefully no lasting damage...

Re: Removing oil from the driveway?

We've developed a product here at work that cleans up oil spills. You pour on this powder, which you then sweep up with a dustpan and brush - no trace of oil left. Also works to lift/absorb oil spillage in water/other fluids and a few other applications. Genuinely amazing stuff.

4Motion Brakes

Need new brakes all round but a little unsure what size discs are on my car, 2004 TDi 4Motion Estate. If I put my reg into Euro Car Parts I get a few different options - 312 / 288mm discs. Is there anyway to know for sure without taking the wheel off and checking what's actually on the car?
