Thanks for the replies, I should add that this anomaly has been ongoing for the past 3 years during my Father's ownership of the car, now my wife and I have taken it on I'd quite like to sort it if I can.

Our 2008 140cr tdi has a weird problem that's not making it undrivable but it is quite annoying. When the engine is cold the gearbox pulls away smoothly, but once the engine is warm when you pull away it jerks violently away unless you prod the throttle to release the auto hold and once then it star...

The free running alternator pulley can make the car more "Diesely" if it's seized, I'd check that first.

Have you checked all the possible mechanical causes that could be making it louder?
Exhaust leak?
Free running alternator pulley seized?
Engine cover loose?

You need all 4 mate, I tried to get away with just the fronts but it was bloody dangerous, major oversteer turning from major to minor roads in snow and locking up rear brakes when braking on snow, the grip differential is massive. Me too, fantastic winter tyre, quiet on normal roads and really grippy on snow and ice, when we had 9" of snow a couple of years ago I went everywhere the 4x4s went, much to their surprise!fluke wrote:I went for the Hankook icept evo, unbelievable grip.

4motions seem to wear their tyres out faster, also some of the rear suspension components are pricey and harder to get due to their less common nature.

It's really really easy to work with because you can pull it back off if it creases, it only sets once you've warmed it with a hair dryer type thing.
