Check the car for fault codes. Car only goes into limp mode for certain things to protect the car. usually over / under boost but other things such as crank / cam sensor issues can cause limp mode. There should be a fault code stored.

The gt1749VC is the turbo used on some of the transverse pd130 and pd150 cars. It has an integrated exhaust manifold and I don't think it will fit the longitudinal cars like the Passat and A4 etc. Doesn't give you a great advantage over the standard VB turbo on the PD130.
