Re: B5.5 2.0 ALT - Rad fan on constantly issue.
Yup ... just read that one. Phoned my local VAG specialist and he echoed the same thing. He also quoted me £140 do put a genuine new one on along with a coolant flush and VW guarantee. He also said that was for 2 hours labour but it should only take an hour, so could well be cheaper. Considering th...

Re: B5.5 2.0 ALT - Rad fan on constantly issue.
They retrieved the bits ... the impeller had broken in two and was cmplete when they removed it. My thoughts on knackered thermostat are becoming more likely the cause of my issue unfortunatly.
Obviously any more ideas are appreciated.

B5.5 2.0 ALT - Rad fan on constantly issue.
Bit of history first. Car is a 2002 B5.5 2.0 ALT Petrol saloon manual. Car was fine and dandy until the water pump impeller parted company from the main unit. Temperature rocketed (though I drove it safe to the garage and it never went above the red line, never above 3/4 after I noticed with careful...

will point out our Passat is a B5.5 2.0 ALT engine. Dunno if it would work with later models, chances are it won't reading about them.

Re: buying hardware to plug into my passat
I just bought one similar to the one karl just linked to. After a bit of tinkering and referring to device manger settings I now have VCDS-lite up and running. Used it yesterday to clear a fault code and run a few live data things. Very useful.

Boot CD changer issues
Hi guys. Slowly getting on top of the things to get right. Fixed the bust water pump. Got VAG-COM up and running on the laptop and fixed the EML issue (temperamental coolant temp sensor (G62) so that will need changing though I think there is two from the pictures) and finally onto the CD changer in...

What else do you drive?
Technically the Passat is the wifes car so I cannot really claim I drive it on a daily basis. Have to admit I have never really been taken with the VW marque as a whole, but now owning one I am impressed with it. Anyways onto the question in hand. What else do you drive? For me its my daily runner. ...

Re: How do i install Blow-off valve?
Cannot be done (well difficult and pointless on a diesel) anyway due to the lack of throttle body. The turbo on petrol cars forces air through the throttle body. When the throttle is shut (foot off the loud pedal) the forced air from the turb is restricted and builds pressure between the turbo and t...

Re: do i have a B4 or a B5?
B4 has fog lights inline with the front number plate on the front bumper. B5 has them down low.
In Scotty's signature picture above you can see a B4 in the middle and B5's either side.

Re: cleaned turbo out and uncovered a new problem (pic heavy
Just show her the state of the garage floor, benches and walls. Thats where all the crud I clean off stuff usually ends up. As for feeding oil into it I would plug the lower hole and then fill the upper with oil while turning the impeller. Leave it overnight to feed through everything. This should h...

Re: cleaned turbo out and uncovered a new problem (pic heavy
Turbos don't really get any speed up until you hit 2000-2500 rpm depending on specific engine. Until then they just idly spin. When you hit the boosting stage they then ramp up to anything like 200,000 on high end high performance models, but usually around 100,000-150,000 for most cars. Lack of oil...

Re: cleaned turbo out and uncovered a new problem (pic heavy
Hate to say it my Isuzu Troopers turbo screeched like hell (hence why she is called Banshee) for months. That was before the turbo died permanently. I would say its an oil feed problem, and the bearings are dry.

Re: How2 - B5.5 saloon boot solenoid replacement
Cheers for the praise buddy. As for your problem is it shutting at all? If it shuts I would possibly say that your issue is the cable from the lock to the latch. On the saloon it relies on them to pull the various bits and pieces from the lock and solenoid. This is the first ever VAG car I have work...

How2 - B5.5 saloon boot solenoid replacement
Done a few how 2's for other forums and thought it only fair to start here on something often talked about. I have found a few threads explaining how to do it, but thought some pictures to go with it would help. As some of you may know we bought our B5.5 with a dodgy boot. Basically the previous gar...

Re: Red Diesel Thought...
I agree with the fact it may not affect pump prices much at all if everyone played ball with this one, but I am of the opinion that we shouldn't give them any excuse not to lower them.

Re: Best brake bleed kit??
I tend to use patience and gravity. Just crack the bleed nipple on the caliper furthest from the master cylinder and let it drain through. Takes time but gets there in the end. Just remember to keep topping up the reservoir with fluid as you go. You can save time if you crimp the flexi about an inch...

Re: Turbo hissing badly, chugging and smokey
Loud screech if the bearings run dry, nothing at all if it is seized, and a series of bangs and rattles if the compressor vanes disintegrate and sends loads of bits of metal through the intake into the engine. I have had all three. Either way you will experience a huge power loss as the turbo effect...

Re: B5 Passat starting problems!
Being new to VAG cars I am sort of guessing, but being an old hand at mechanics I would say it sounds like an immobaliser issue. Either that or a possibly a thermostat thinking its not hot and trying to start the car as if it were cold ... therefore far far too rich and flooding the engine. Are you ...

You can clean them indeed, and you have to pay for the oil to cover it each time you do so ... then again how many people actually clean them in reality. I had one on my Nissan 300ZX, and it was always something "I must clean that sometime" ;)
