If you are smoking and poor mpg I would take a punt on one of the intake pipes from the turbo to the inlet manifold. I can highly recommend Elsawin, to install you just have to be patient and read the instructions properly. Once loaded it works fine, the diagrams are 10 times better than Haynes, although it only show the use of VW tools.
