It's always best to recode a new battery because the charging characteristics changes as the battery ages so it will still think it's the old battery when replaced.

My fathers 10 year old Passat still on it's original Varta. A mates 2012 B7 Passat came with an Exide AGM but my just sold 2013 came with a Varta AGM, I guess VW mix and match.

Probably a rear abs sensor, they are a known problem. A friends back 2 sensors failed within a month of each other.

I wouldn't worry about, some seem to do it as mine does it now and again. My old thread and video

I bit the bullet 2 weeks ago and ordered a Tungsten silver 240ps biturbo 4 motion Passat DSG with lots of toys Only got the build week today. It's going to be built by week 3 and the dealer should have it between 10-15th February..

I can't see anyone getting 206 with a 140 remap. I fitted a 170 turbo to my car and with a dpf delete and map it only reached 200bhp,according to darkside that's about right. The engines are good in the b7 the newer CF engines seem good BUT unless you put away a small fortune for an EGR and DMF all should be good and dandy

Regarding the bong sounds they are definately not any warning sounds like from brake fluid, temp or speed warnings. The rns 510 was making the bongs. It even sounded with the engine/ignition off while the radio was on.

I think the bongs are now the least of my worries. I now have ( i'm guessing it has to be ) flywheel rattle on idle. I just hope it gets me home for the remaining 500 miles! I don't think i'll buy a VW again, pure junk and had to fork out for an egr last week.

19 degrees, no it's a different bong. This is a quiet suttle one through the speakers.

Currently on a road trip in France and this eve when driving around the Pyrenees i got a suttle bong coming from the speakers that happened every 10 mins or so. Bit uneasy being so far from home. No warning lights etc, any ideas?

What you describe could be a lazy startup exacerbated by glowplug failure. Please enlighten us what makes it an EGR failure? Vagcom told me ;-), got the engine light and fault code. A faulty egr can cause running issues. I know of a 2014 Passat where a faulty EGR made a cold engine keep cutting out.
