Did it do much damage to the plastic grille? Gonna need a new insert, but it has also pulled the plastic bit a away from the painted part of the bumper. You should get a 14 day period where if you are not happy with your phone or contract you can change them. Not sure about cancelling the contract though. I do about 350 miles a week and manage to get around 36 mpg. I recently swapped from a diesel which was giving me about 42 mpg (not a passat though). With the price difference between petrol and diesel at the moment it has not really affected my pocket too much.
