Had a diesel myself once and it did the same thing, not sure on passats but has it got a glow plug light in the dash if it has and it goes out very quickly its possible its the glow plugs not doing there job replaced them and all was good , can't say that it will sort it but that sorted mine

nope mate that's no mk3 coil pack its not even coming up on google search for the part number you have, think some ones got there wires crossed, unless that's off a newer vr engine but even then the part number would come up on search, that needs sending back
