EGR removal/replace
EGR on my AWX started to make the 'duck quack' sound. Bought new gaskets from TSP to remove and try to clean. Couldn't get the bolts holding the pipe from the exhaust to the base of the EGR undone to access the 3rd bolt holding the EGR to inlet manifold so gave up. Since been told EGR needs replacin...

Re: April 2017 Car Tax Rate for a 1.9tdi Passat 2002?
The new tax bandings are for new cars registered from 1st April 2017 - not cars registered before 1st April 2017.
No doubt existing VED rates will be adjusted at the next budget but the figures to which you are referring don't affect NEW vehicles registered before 1st April 2017.

Re: Alternator Pulley issue
Yes, using the 8mm Alen Key from the back. Haynes manual suggests putting an M5x60 bolt through one of the holes in the pulley (not the viscous coupling) to contra hold whilst undoing with the Alen Key. Have a small supply of bent M5 bolts, ideal for bolting corners together!

Re: Alternator Pulley issue
Cheers for the tip! Very much appreciated. A neighbour helped a few attempts earlier; we wedged an old screwdriver between the viscous drive and the ends of the bolts holding the pulley on. Bent the screwdriver. Should the bolt be moved clockwise or counter (viewed from the back)? Was looking at dis...

Cheers. Still can't get the viscous fan coupling to undo to get the bottom alternator bolt out. Have managed to bend a few things trying. May have to admit defeat and get a mobile mechanic in to finish the job off.

My 130PD Highline Estate feels like being on a LiLo, on a half filled water bed, on top of a half inflated bouncy castle but my weekender is a TT qS. New shocks are high on the agenda!

Re: rear brake question?
I bought some repair kits from E-bay. Thought there was only one option for rear caliper. Just checked my reg on ECP and there appear to be two different qualities of rear caliper (one may be a refurb, the other brand new) and both show the same pad thickness and piston diameter and on checking pads...

Had something similar with an 80 TDI many years ago and it was a combination of the pipe from the air box and a vacuum hose.

Tend to listen to blues/blues rock for driving. Have a playlist called "Driving" on iPod. Got to have the ZZ Top trilogy (Gimme All Your Lovin', Sharp Dressed Man, Legs) included for any road trip. Like to find tracks with model names (e.g., Camaro - Kings of Leon, Mean Old Toledo - Soleda...

Re: What did you do to your Passat today?
Drove it to Silverstone - battery on my TT died in last night's frost. On the way home, upset a 911 driver without even trying (is that doubly embarrassing for him?) and a Toyota Avensis driver that the car in front is definitely NOT a Toyota. It may not be driven quickly, but my 'wagon doesn't slow...

Re: VW Passat b3 1.8 gl. Is it worth saving?
If it is single point injection (throttle body) it will be 90bhp, multi-point would be 112. This was toward the end of the importership being owned by Lonrho, before the factory bought them out, so specs could still be a bit odd-ball to fit with the high value of the DM whilst trying to keep the pri...

Re: Glow plug change on a PD diesel
Great write up, easy to follow, was able to write the bullet points down on paper to follow at the car. My AWX engine has quite a different fuel filter bracket - no upper attachment to head. There was a pinch fixing, which required an M8 XZN bit to loosen, then the filter lifted out and the bracket ...

Re: What did you do to your Passat today?
Replaced the glow plugs and had a bit of a clean up with the cover off. Discovered that a previous owner has already installed uprated bulbs - which is both great and a bit disappointing in that dipped beam is not that brilliant (but have got Xenons on the TT as my comparison).

When EVO was fresh off the presses they did a test (albeit with V-Power petrol) and the effect of it was marked. They put it in brand new cars, cars that had run on supermarket fuel and did the reverse too. The V-Power kept the new engines much cleaner and began cleaning up the engines run only on s...

Fitted a boot tray and mat, cleaned out the garden beside the pollen filter, took the engine cover off to have a peek (looks pretty good, no apparent issues), lost the rubber bobbin for the front left cover mount putting it back on (Doh!) and got the tyre pressures sorted out. Also sorted out a stra...

Hello everyone! Just bought a 54 plate 130 Highline estate as my workhorse/daily driver. Have already used the plenum chamber "How to" and cleaned out the garden beside the pollen filter. Rest of it looks OK but will probably delve deeper at the weekend to make sure. Looking forward to bei...
