Re: Help! Door disaster.
Options exhausted I think. I've stripped the door to nothing and even manually operated the lock motor with a battery and some wires. It feels to me as though there is no connection at all between the internal and external handles and the mechanism. The only variation happens when I pull the lock ro...

Help! Door disaster.
Yesterday I resealed my pollen filter housing and cleaned out my plenum. I then lifted the carpet and dried out the wiring. No signs of any corrosion and no damp in the CCM box. Dried the carpet - happy days. Today I decided to hoover out the car and the rear passenger door won't open from the outsi...

Re: Passenger footwell carpet damp.
Done and done! I removed the wipers, wiper scuttle, battery, bettery tray and other bits, and removed the pollen filter housing. Disaster - the seal around it had degenerated into a sort of black Plasticine and had gaps. Luckily I was able to remove it in strips that left no mess but just gunge and ...

Passenger footwell carpet damp.
This morning at 3am I was awoken by my Passat's alarm going off. I got dressed quickly and snatched the bat from behind the front door only to find...nothing. I cleaned out my plenum drains during the summer and it all looked clear but my footwell carpet is damp to the touch on top. What else could ...

Re: Boot won’t open
Did you get it open eventually? I imagine it was something slammed into the strike plate / lock mech? If it were me I'd push down on the boot and try to whip it open during the actuating phase.

Re: I changed my oil.
Just did my first oil change on my 1998 1.8 non-turbo 189k auto saloon. I hope it wasn't the first oil change that car has ever seen  Oh no....the car has lasted, as it's actually been quite well maintained up to a couple of years ago.189k oil would have been a solid wouldn't it? Like pitch. :D

Re: I changed my oil.
Do these suffer the same low oil capacity /sludge/ blocked strainer issues as the 1.8T ? I thought not as the sludge is allegedly produced by residual oil being "cooked" in the hot turbo on switching off. When you start up again, these pellets of cooked oil are pushed around and into the ...

I changed my oil.
Just did my first oil change on my 1998 1.8 non-turbo 189k auto saloon. Observations? Under engine tray was a dirty addition to the job but seems to have preserved an awful lot of paint on the suspension components etc. Compared to say a Ford of the same age it was like new. The filter is in an awkw...

Re: Stinky screenwash
I had not actually noticed any nasty smells but in view of all that has been said I was inspired to have a look at the washer bottle on my SEAT, and it too was lined with a slimy black gunk, which I realise now is the stuff that occasionally blocks one of the nozzles. The bottle was dead easy to re...

Fog light
I was replacing a blown side light on my 1999 B5 1.8 and decided to check the rest - and found a bulb missing on the nearside cluster. I installed a bulb and it worked as a foglight. However, the cluster would not go back in - due to the hole being too small for the bulb behind the lens! I had to re...

Transmission fluid check / change.
Today I pulled away sharply from some lights in my 1999 1.8 B5 auto and noticed a slight "slippage" of the transmission in first before it connected properly. Since my car has done 187K miles I'd like to check the level of, and perhaps change the fluid. How do I do this? A link to an artic...

Re: Stinky screenwash
Among other things there are salts in washing up liquid that arent very kind to paintwork. Whilst I wouldnt say buy the OTT overpriced types of screenwash aimed at detailing fanatics it is worth putting in something intended for the job. I dont know how you guys have washer tanks full for so long, ...

Re: Stinky screenwash
I'm glad you got it sorted, since your first post I have been saving my overnight steradent water and putting it in a 5 litre container for you, would have been cheap too. Mind you, thinking about it, one or two bits of kebab meat might have blocked your jets. :ymsick: (In the style of Terry Wogan)...

Re: Stinky screenwash
They used to say washing up liquid rotted the screen rubbers but i used it years ago all the time like 40 years ago lol. "Screen rubbers" eh? Remember them? Well, as it happens, my other "fun" car is a Rover Metro 1.1 1993 model and it does have all of the windows held in with o...

Re: Stinky screenwash
They used to say washing up liquid rotted the screen rubbers but i used it years ago all the time like 40 years ago lol. I only use a couple of drops in the whole thing - just to make the water "wetter" so that it does a better job of cleaning the screen. As a lad I used to use more and i...

Re: Stinky screenwash
**Update** - solved. Firstly I bought a bottle brush for £1 from Wilko. Next I built a vacuum pump from a piece of broad aquarium hose, a 5l screenwash container and an "Air Hammer" paddling pool inflation/deflation pump. I used the pump to extract yesterday's disinfectant mix and filled t...

Re: Stinky screenwash
Empty the tank and refill with warm water then put some steredent tablets in 3 or 4. After a few hours raw some of the water through to the screen so as to get some of the mix in the pipes ans jets then let it stand as long as you can over night if possible this will clean the system. Drain the tan...

Re: Stinky screenwash
Thanks everyone. It looks to me like a refill / syphon / repeat process to me as my washer motor works great and I don't want to tempt those 18 year old plastics to break. I may invest in a long bottle brush for some robust scrubbing at the weekend.

Wonder how easy/hard it is to remove the reservoir to give it a proper clean - then it's VW only.dickturpin wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2017 8:05 pm Lots of us have had this...only solution seems to be using the genuine VW screenwash.

Stinky screenwash
My screenwash stinks of an eggy, drainy type smell. I topped it up with a couple of pints of generic ready-mixed but the smell persisted. I have since syphoned off the fluid and noticed that the reservoir is covered in a black deposit. I have since re-filled the reservoir with a mix of plain water a...

My "lights on" alarm is intermittent and does not sound most of the time though the interior light always comes on. This has lead to me accidentally leaving my side lights on twice? Is this a known issue?

Brake imbalance / wobble
My brakes have not been right since I got my 1999 1.8 B5 saloon. There was a feeling that something wasn't right as the brakes did not seem to bite, and there was a slight wobbly feel on harder braking. Today I aimed to find out what's wrong as the discs and pads have plenty on them. The cause was a...
