Help in the Sheffield area

Ay up all. Can anyone recommend anybody to do a few jobs on my trusty stead before the winter sets in/MOT time? Basic service stuff.....anti-roll bar bushes, one ABS sensor (buggered it when i replaced the wheel bearing a few months back). Wheel bearing, CV and rubber boot all on the same side. I'd ...

Re: Gearbox Oil

I'm no expert but.... i recently bought 3ltrs of Castrol Syntrans V-FE 75W-80 from Opie oils for my AVF engined 130PD manual 6-speed box (almost 200k on the clock) and cant see any problems with it. It was £16.99 a ltr (so cheaper than AutoDoc's) plus 10% off with discount code of CIVINFO. Quicker d...

Re: Why havnt i lost all of my coolant?

Looks more like the bottom of the condenser to me mate. Mines missing too and bottom. They only bond to the tubes through which coolant/refrigerant flows. So usually won’t leak when they come off, that’s not to say they don’t though [emoji102][emoji102] Ahh, cool (sure theres a pun in there) i'll l...

Why havnt i lost all of my coolant?

Hi all. Hope everybody's keeping well during the bad times we're going through. While out doing my big shop today (no loo roll on the shelves again) i noticed this sitting behind my lower front grill. I fished it out and it looks a bit like the lower rail of my coolant rad! how on earth is it not sp...

Re: Front ABS sensor removal

I would be giving the sensor a little tap down in the hole, during bearing replacement they can work their way out a little causing the air gap to increase. Hmm, might try that. I'm halfway through demolishing the sensor though, the metal insert is a bit dented and the plastic head a bit chewed up. ...

Re: Front ABS sensor removal

Ahh, ok, so the metal sleeve that sits in the hub can stay in place as you dig out the metal sensor itself. Is the metal sensor hollow then?

Re: Front ABS sensor removal

I've got in close and removed the rubber seal and cn now see its only the plastic head that is spinning, not the metal sensor. Did you manage to remove it without removing the metal mounting sleeve?or did this need obliterating too, requiring a new one (ie, hub off again job, as i think (looking at ...

Re: Front ABS sensor removal

It rotates but dosnt seam to want to pull out. The plastic casing is getting a bit chewed up now as i've had to use grips on it to get it moving. I'll keep at it with the mole grips locked firmly on and gentle tapping with a hammer to see if it will pop out.
Thanks for the advice.

Front ABS sensor removal

Hi All. I cant get the sensor out of the front hub of my PD130. I've seen one video that suggests you push it in a bit then twist (bayonet light bulb style), does this seam correct? i'm getting the ABS light stay on on the dash following a hub bearing replacement. I'm hoping just the face of the sen...

Re: Wheel bearing failure...so soon!

Yep,i've gone off TapaTalk too. I cant seam to scroll through the thread items properly, can only see half of them. Anyway (sigh of relief) glad i've got the bearing on the right way. Just need to sort out the ABS light/probe. Reading on some other threads i'm thinking it might be because i switched...

Re: Wheel bearing failure...so soon!

Heres the thing...the inner and outer race on the Meyle bearing i bought (from a link on this thread) were both the same width...BUT....as there was a slight lip (therefore giving it a smaller inner diameter) i deduced that this should be the inner race as there is a shoulder on the hub spigot that ...

Re: Wheel bearing failure...so soon!

In theory yes but it would vibrate a lot at higher speeds and when braking, as if the hubs out of true, so is the disc and the wheel. Ahh,right. Swapped the bearing out today. Real PITA drifting the hub out and had to really belt it (for about half an hour) with a long tube and heavy hammer. I'm pr...

Re: Wheel bearing failure...so soon!

Just a thought but would an out of true hub cause the bearing to fail prematurely?....watched a few Youtube vids (not all Passats) where hubs have been replaced too due to being out of true. My local GSF store has them for next day collection but for £80 (can get Febi items for about £25 from BuyCar...

Re: Wheel bearing failure...so soon!

Ahh,got ya. Undid the two ball joints at the hub carrier leg (where the b1tch of a pinch bolt is)...not the inner ones. I thought that other thread was referring to the end of the steering rack track rod end,and I couldn't see how the height could be set on this. Thanks for clearing that up dude.

Re: Wheel bearing failure...so soon!

I decided to take it to a rent-a-ramp place for a tenner an hour who had a hydraulic press so had to remove the whole leg. The last nut that beat me was the lower most ball joint...it would not move! So with time running out (the place i went to was in the middle of Sheffield,an hours drive away) so...

Re: Wheel bearing failure...so soon!

I stripped everything down yesterday and the weather beat me just before i managed to finish so had to put everything back together without actually replacing the bearing (long story...for another time...if anybody's really bored). I'm a bit worried though as i noticed in this thread (https://www.uk...

Re: Wheel bearing failure...so soon!

Can i be cheeky and ask another question?...i dont want to shell out for a bearing drift kit (if i can help it) so i'm thinking of taking my car to one of those 'rent-a-ramp' type places where you can use their compressor/tools (ramp of course)etc. and they only have a bearing press. Would i need to...

It does sound like classic wheel bearing fail, mine was the same and you only detected it once above 30/40mph Better buy myself a bearing puller set then......oh, and a new bearing s'pose :D Thanks BIG F@ TW@ No worries chap, here's the Meyle bearing I used £23.46 https://www.vwspares.co.uk/advance...

No...and it only really is noticeable after 45-50mph....so dont really wanna be cornering at that speed....well, not too much...well, not with bald tyres too :D

No, dip the clutch and its still there...the noise increases in line with road speed

Re: Wheel bearing failure...so soon!

Said VW specialist said not the bearing (had his stethascope on in an test drove it) but sounds gearboxy.....or possibly due to badly worn tyres. Well i had both wheels off the ground and spun them and that side sounded markedly rougher! So, new tyres on, still no change. Gear oil ordered and will c...
