BTW, ever since the battery removal "reset", it hasn't had the former problem even once and is shifting perfectly. Touch wood it stays that way...

Thanks so much for the very detailed reply! I don't know if this is a job I'm confident tackling on my own, so I reckon I'll give a few auto gearbox specialists a call and see how much they'd charge to take care of it.
