Update on my first post, Part of the clutch, a large retaining clip had broken so that the clip was actually rubbing onto the gearbox case. Over time this had worn through the aluminium gearbox housing. I found a mobile mechanic who ended up towing it to his workshop who carried out all the repairs ...

The gear box has now been removed and the mechanic has forwarded some photographs. You can see clearly that part of the clutch has broken causing it to rub on the aluminium gear box housing. There is a possibility that the gearbox can be welded. I am yet to find out. Unsure how to add the photos.......

Thanks for your reply. I had notice that the drain hole was leaking oil and if something had been broken in the gearbox I may have felt it. I have stopped driving the car now but when I did it felt ok. So there is hope, maybe a leaking crankshaft seal and not the gearbox.

Hi there, I have a 2012 B7 passat, 6 speed Sport, 90K. Noticing oil on the drive I decided to remove the engine covers and recognised that oil has leaked from the gearbox. So it seems that my passats year are know for damage to occur within the bell housing that ends up leaving a hole in the gearbox...
