Re: B5.5 ... The END
The car is going strong in my son's ownership, but is not nearly ever as clean as when I had it. Anyway... I've got a pair of genuine B5.5 headlights I need to get rid of if anyone is interested. Very, good condition, the lenses are like new, but you will need to swap over your levelling motors into...

I would suggest that the brushes in the fan motor are almost worn out.

Re: B5.5 ... The END
And.... Since I gifted the B5.5 to my eldest son back in March, he has put about 30k on the car including a grand European tour! The old Hector is running well and fast approaching 180k miles now. He is looking after it well. As for me, I had yet another Cardiac Arrest in late August but this time e...

Re: New turbo & full arm kit time
Lemforder are the OE gold standard and then Meyle HD's
I fitted a mid range Febi kit before U fitted a Meyle set, the Febi's were junk. But as above some people have a lot of success with the cheapo kits.
No idea about the turbo.

Re: Top suspension mount bolt
Are these the little ones with a 13mm head that hold the carrier bracket to the body?
If so, drill it through and fit a nut a bolt. Check for lower access first.

Re: Coolant leak - can anyone tell me which pipe I need?
There is a coolant distribution flange / manifold at the back of the head under the tandem fuel / vac pump. The coolant flange has an 'o' ring to the head and they fail. Pig of a job to change. There is also a coolant breather hose between the coolant flange and tandem pump that can also sometimes f...

Re: Front control arms change / damper removal
Just take the upper arm carrier / cradle out, it takes but a few minutes. It also allows you, on the bench, to set the correct angle of the arms to the cradle before tightening the bolts. Doing this on the car would be a guess and will lead to the bushes quickly wearing out. By far the biggest issue...

Re: Colour coded plastics?
It has been done but for the door lowers it is like painting the Forth Bridge, they need re-doing and re-doing and re-doing.
Front and rear valances are fine though if the correct paint is used.

Re: Well at least fuel prices are currently low!
Typical.
Twenty years of buying expensive privately funded fuel since I last had a company car.
And now it is as cheap as it was twenty years ago and I've just got a company car with a fuel card.
Never mind.

Re: Weak brakes
The brakes should be razor sharp and very strong to the point of feeling like an on/off switch compared to many cars. I'd suggest the pads are contaminated, the fluid is old, the bearing surfaces the pads slide on are dirty, the discs are worn etc or a combination of all the above. Again, when worki...

probably best to go for an allowance rather than company car as they will probably only have crappy options available. Pastures new.
I'm in the process of changing jobs and the new company has a rule of no car older than five years old. It is either a company car or a car allowance. My old place didn't care less how old your car was. So that obviously means my trusty and perfectly good sixteen year old Highline Estate does not fi...

Re: B5 Track rod end.......
These very seldom cause any problems, it is normally the balljoint that gives up first.
Meyle HD track rod ends do not have the rubber inserts for reference however this may not be the answer as there is likely to be an underlying problem.

I'm pretty sure it isn't the alternator pulley. I changed that and the viscose fan bearing a few years ago.
The PAS pulley seems to have a little bit of a wobble on it.

My PAS pump is starting to chirp and sing like a canary and needs replacing pronto.
In all my time on here I cannot recall anyone reporting one as failed. Or am I imagining it?
Looks like it might be do-able without faffing with the front end as well.
