Re: Alloys and tyres.

You mention 5x122, do you mean 5x112? If the latter then the pcd is ok. As Mindriot says, the offset is important. To remain legal with the wheel and/or tyre not sticking out beyond the bodywork an ET of 35 is just right. A larger ET number will move the wheel inwards toward the suspension, and, say...

Re: gearbox/diff

Very interesting all that. When I changed the diff bearings last year, I used the vw oil at 23 quid a litre, 2.4ltrs so 3 bottles, and was a little surprised to have slightly reluctant gear changes for a while. I'll try that Sintofluid next time.

Which engine light comes on? When it goes into limp mode can it be reset by turning the ignition on and off?

Re: Dilemma

Not had much of a chance to look Gaz. Collected it on Monday from Wales, came down to Cornwall 5am Tuesday. It's been fine all week but I'll put it on the diagnostics when I get back and let you know the results. Seems to have a slight misfire on tickover.

Dilemma

Could be a sad day for me.Thought an Audi a6 avant at weekend and now have to decide what to do about the passat. The wife may decide to run it but I do not think it would take her long to ruin it. much too good to break so it may come up for sale if I can hear to part with it :-?

I always think that if there's money in your pocket and there's something to do on the car, it's money well spent. Never retrievable, but so what :esm

This was my suspicion, and in fact it's only the wheels I want.I;ll have to see if the guy will sell the wheels only.

different diameter wheels

The rear wheels on my passat are 9j, fronts are 8j, both 18 diameter. I have been looking for some time for spare 9j's and two have come up. These wheels have 265/40x18 tyres, my own tyres are 235/40x18. The difference in circumference on these potentially new rear wheels is 24mm. Is this likely to ...

Also, when you polish the car make sure to apply plenty of polish to the tailgate where it meets the bottom of the glass, save it from corrosion where the water holds.

S4 rear calipers arrived today, so they;ll be given the treatment, cleaning, new seals etc, I will take pictures because there aren't many going up lately.
