Re: B3 bumper grille - who does them (new)

Haha you might be waiting a while! I'm not in need of one any more and the mate who asked me has changed his plans and is now looking to sell the car

B3 bumper grille - who does them (new)

I found some a year or so, then promptly forgot where I saw them... A mate asked me about them recently - I confidently told him to "try the internet" (I was feeling super-helpful!) ... he failed, I looked, also failed.

Any ideas?

Re: wanter: rear shocks with springs

Its a faff to strip the plastic trims out of the boot - not worth fitting 2nd hand ones in my opinion.

Re: wanter: rear shocks with springs

Standard are readily available from motor factors. ... I go for kyb unless I'm feeling particularly well off, in which case I go for bilsteins.

Re: The gathering

By the time I'd given it a wipe over, had a mooch round and chatted with mk1 and mk2 mates I barely got to talk to any passat-ists! Thanks to Ant and the others for all the hard work putting the show on... Same time next year (with even more b3/4 content hopefully!) Never know, I might get chance to...

Re: White smoke from exhaust

Getting feeler gauges under a straightedge doesn't sound good. .. As you say, if you have a trusted engine machine shop nearby, that sounds like the way to go!

You're best to use photobucket or similar to host images to use on here - then just copy the .IMG link from there onto your post.

Re: White smoke from exhaust

Not the most useful answer, but I'm really not sure!
I'd anticipate that any of the spi heads would bolt on, but can't offer you any guarantees!
Did all the holes line up on your head gasket?
Can you see any cracks or damage on the head or on the bores?

Re: White smoke from exhaust

It might prove to be more cost effective to replace the head (assuming you can find a known good one!) ... might be cheaper than the skim and pressure test! ... just a thought. As you say, the engine guys always want the bare head. You might find someone who will work round the exhaust manifold if t...

Re: engine replacement

If it's a digi 2l, I think it's a 2e code - that's also in some early mk3 gti and the rare late 8v corrado.

Re: White smoke from exhaust

Any possibility that you've refitted the crank aux pulley onto the crank sprocket on the wrong quadrant? That way, your crank timing could be 90 degrees out (or multiples thereof)

Re: White smoke from exhaust

There's a dot on the intermediate pulley. You need to re-fit the aux pulley onto the crank (in the same place it came off!) which has a notch on the outer edge to line up with the dot on the intermediate pulley. The cam MIGHT have a mark on the outside that lines up with a mark at the middle top of ...

Re: Head valve spring compressor

Don't get one of those U shaped bar ones off eBay! I got one and the threads stripped on it on the first valve. The design is great and after making new threaded bushes for it, it worked lovely (!) A sealey or Clarke of the conventional type should be OK... I always just wish they had more leverage!

Re: White smoke from exhaust

Oooh! Never considered it might have them - i think of them as a mk1 thing! In that case, I'd whip the inlet off in the interests of lightening and clearance and leave the manifold on the head. Make sure to mark the timing up (cam sprocket mark is on the back of the sprocket and aligns with the top ...

Re: Cylinder Head skimmig

Shouldn't be a problem - they take a VERY small amount off. ... Technically, you should use a thicker gasket to make up the difference. I've never looked into the availability of such a thing for these engines though.

Re: White smoke from exhaust

Could you not leave the manifold on the head and break the joint onto the downpipe? Must've been on our mk2 (freshest in my mind !) But I was able to do that using sockets on long extensions from underneath. Just a thought - can't guarantee that it would be feasible on yours ... I habitually use new...

Re: White smoke from exhaust

sounds like the head's got to come off to find out... The job's not too bad really - assuming it's just the gasket (you'd have it off and back together in an afternoon)... Worst case scenario is a crack in the head (again, not visible till the head's off) .. The damage is obviously between the water...
