Timing belt tensioner question?

Hi,would be grateful for opinions on this.got a Mk 3 golf ,1y engine code,picked up a gates kit and noticed tensioner felt a lot lighter than original,so difference is plastic roller instead of metal ,now when fitted and tensioned it just looks weak as if the plastic flexes to much over the bearing, any one come across this before ? I know the passat one is metal also. To fit or not to fit?
