BMW Fueling Problem

Anybody know anything about bmw cars.
Hi all
I went out today and car started perfectly drove about a mile turned it off and five minutes later went to start it again.
Well it won't start had to get recovered home for now.
Question
Should i be able to hear the in tank pump running ?.
I can hear the under floor pump and if i don't try to start the car it will run for around 45 seconds.
The car tries to start but won't.
Car is a 2004 320d auto.
