First approach on engine bay

Well.... How best to approach my engine bay for first time ever? I'm thinking TFR and soft brush and car shampoo with hosepipe to gently rinse off? It's got 7 yrs of "honest" muck and grime in there so I thought probably a bit of cleaning effort might spruce it up some..... Or do you never get a good look from this far gone?
