Apple car play

Hi all, new poster here. I’ve recently bought a 2016 B8 estate. I can see that my car infotainment system has the App-Connect system but it isn’t enabled and apparently I need to contact the dealer to get an activation key. Contacted the dealer and they want over £250 to activate it. They did tell me that it may/may not be possible for it to work as my car is on a change over year(true? Not sure) and won’t know until it’s in their workshop. There must be a cheaper way of obtaining what is probably a password to access the app-connect system. Any ideas? Please help!
