Road tripping wagon

I am looking to buy a b3/b4/b5 passat estate on the grounds it will be a motor to slog around Europe and eventually Canada in. Until recently drove a 1.8T B5 estate which was good and spacious.

But drawn to the slightly older models, already have a project car (polo g40) so looking for one with minimal maintenance, oil and filters is fine.

Had a search on the forum but couldn't find any threads on previous road trips, so looking for engine and model suggestions.
