New Gamma not retaining code

I've just got a brand spanking new Gamma to fit to a 1998 B5. I've followed the code procedure but it doesn't bring 'safe' up at the end. It shows 'learn' once the code digits have been entered but doesn't progree beyond that. If you release the buttons held to enter the code the radio will start working but once the ignition is turned off it returns to safe mode.
