RNS 310 UK Map Updates

I keep having trouble with my RNS310 Sat Nav, because the software is so old there are roads I drive on that are not on the maps and it keeps freezing on me. I had the antenna unit replaced last year, but it's not made much difference. Is there an easy cheap way to update the maps? Also how easy is it to update the firmware on this type of unit. It's in a 2010 Passat.
