no ignition fault B6 passat

Post by passat tdi130 »

right guys here it is a rough guide to the repair of the ignition switch / fob switch on a passat b6

if your car upon inserting the fob into the ignition slot fails to power on the car ~( no dash lights )

this is the fault..!!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KAN92_9VZc

firstly try twisting the fob to the right and you may find the car will spring to life if it does your chances of a repair are high..!

here goes

firstly remove the surrond around the rev counter and speedo it just unclips a good pull will get it going..

secondly remove the surround around the stereo again just clips on a good tug will unclip it ( dont unplug the airbag light )

thirdly remove the plastic cover on the ignition fob hole again its clipped on it will come off i found prising it with a small screwdriver you will find a torx screw under it..

fouth remove the head light switch push the headlight switch inwards in pos 0 ( off ) and while pushing inwards turn lights to sidelights on position and pull gently towards you it should come out it may need a small amount of persuasion underneath is a torx screw

fifth locate all the torx screws around the lower dash panel you will find some behind the fuse box drivers side ( right hand drive ) look carefully and you will find them all.

sixth pop the steering cowl on the top ..

seventh unplug all the light switch epb switch and headlight aim adjust / dimmer

once all the torx screws are removed and the lower panel is removed unplug the fob ignition reader

take in house / shed / garage and on the top you will see a raised up cover it un clips to reveal under it a board with 2 torx screws holding the board..

now here you need to be good at soldering work and be able to use a solder removal tool / sucker

IF YOU ARE NOT STOP NOW AND GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS..!!!!!

once you have the soldering iron hot enough and your sucker ready you will see in one lower corner if i remember right the bottom right corner with the fob slot / transport to the left 2 small solder points these are actually 2 pins that have the immobiliser pick up tagged to make sure they are un soldered and DO NOT follow the board when lifting the board out ( still attached / soldered ) make sure the pins stay in the switch..or you will snap the very thin wires that connect to those two pins coming from the pick up ring..!

once you have the board out you will find 3 micro switches one at the front one half way and one at the rear

the front one is the immob active check key micro
the one half way is the ignition on micro
and the very rear is the engine start micro

the ones we need to remove is the immob one at the front and the ignition on half way

before you do get a continuity tester and check the middle / halfway micro when its out there should be no continuity when you push it in or put your fob in the carrier it should show continuity ( connection ) if it does not and it show no reading what you will find is the ignition on micro needs to be pressed more firmly as its worn and then will show a continuity..!

the fix is simply swap the immob one for the ignition one and you should then find your car will power up if you test the fob carrier when you have put the board back in and re soldered it all back up that when you push your fob in the switch continuity will be on the middle micro connections ( the 2 outer contacts )

to replace the board make sure you partially push your fob into the carrier and observe under the board that the microswitches are not getting trapped as they will..!!!!!!!

the switch you swap from the front does not need a connection when pushed in only when its out which the faulty micro does ok..!

i hope this helps someone out as im sure vw will charge around £1000 for this as they will tell you you need

a new ignition fob carrier / switch
ignition control unit / ecu
and probably a steering column to boot

also you cannot just change the fob carrier / switch its coded to the key and the ignition ecu..!

GOOD LUCK

any help drop me a pm i will try to help if possible
