INTERIOR AUTO DIM MIRROR

Year 2000 B4 estate "SPORT" ( presume that model name was a VW joke? )came from new with an auto dipping interior mirror, which was very good and convenient. But now the auto dim seems to not work. A new VW replacement costs about £200 plus fitting. I am reluctant to try fitting it myself, as it seems bonded to the windscreen glass and is combined with the auto rain sensor wipers.
The daytime view in the mirror is imperfect, but usable.
But at night the dipping is clumsy by just shoving the mirror base forward by hand - and then back again later when the nuisance has gone.
I was wondering if there is a manual dip accessory interior mirror that could be clipped on over the existing mirror.
It would have the normal tiny lever at lower edge to make dip work.
Any ideas?
