Snapped belt in engine bay !!

Snapped belt in engine bay !!
I was carrying out a routine oil check when I noticed something loose towards the front of the engine bay - I put my hand in and pulled out what looks like a very thin belt of some description - it has a date half way on it from 2008 and looks like it has snapped. Can anyone tell me what this belt is if possible? I am really worried about driving the car until I have identified it so any help is much appreciated.
