Dodgy fuel guage

that was the second time the wife has ran out of fuel in the bus.
( 52 plate passat sport 130 tdi)

First time the needle was just above the red and this time it ran out on quarter full mark, reading 80 miles to empty on trip computer...

hmmmm any ideas, whats wrong, or should i get a new fuel sender unit?
