identifying what springs i have

i have a 98 1.8t sport and a spring snapped on new years eve i have managed to get a front strut from a v reg 1.8 sport and have fitted it today. now the thing that has me a bit confused is they are both sport models and both springs have different id marks on them. my original spring has 1 white mark and 3 brown marks and the replacement spring has 1 white and 2 brown marks. does anyone know what the marks mean as i would have thought all sport models would have had the same springs
