vag com blues

[drifter.p]

i have a 3b passat b5 1.8 turbo 20v estate
the main reason for the vag com is my central locking only unlocks and does not lock
and all my interior lights stay on and the drivers puddle light in the bottom of the door

i bought a vag com lead off ebay
i have the lead set in device manager to com port 1

ok i run the auto scan
it recognises the engine then the abs
it then skips a few and pops up a box saying "too many communication errors" and stops

i have then tried "select control module" and that says "no communications with interface"

i did connect to the ccm and there was an emergancy code here so i cleared he code and have restarted the test and the fault code does not reappear

has anyone else had this issue or any help would be greatful
