1.9 TDI 130 Auto PRND gearbox fault when cold, help?

Post by trapjaw »

Hi everyone. I've had my 1.9 tdi automatic for a few months now and it's been brilliant. Runs like a champ, starts first time every time, etc. It's done about 170 000 miles.

Zero problems until recently. Every now and then after starting it in the morning and trying to put it into gear, whether R or D, there will be a clunk and then all gears on the display light up (PRND234), which I've learned is limp mode. Usually if I switch the ignition off and try again it will be okay and shift normally. Sometimes I have to do this twice or even three times, though, and it seems to be happening increasingly frequently, which is worrying...

When the engine is warm, after driving for a while, it doesn't do this at all and I can shift perfectly normally. Also, when driving, the automatic shifting is generally quite smooth.

Any ideas on what's causing this? TIA.
